Principal of Mairehau Primary
Welcome
Welcome to my blog spot. Another exciting step in our global classroom. Being a principal is such a great job and there are daily reminders of what a privileged position it is.
One of the most rewarding things in being a principal is sharing the successes of the children and of the staff with them. My blog will focus on celebrating those successes.

I am enjoying seeing where readers come from - all over the world. If you would like to contact me you can email me at principal@mps.school.nz. Would love to hear from you.
Welcome to 2013
My apologies for a poor year last year. I have renewed vigor and figured out the new system so it is good to be back. Regards.
Terrific Touch Teams
With 10 teams in the local touch tournament, Mairehau Primary is well represented. With over 100 pupils enjoying this team sport, the energy and enjoyment was clear to see on a wonderful warm Wednesday late afternoon. While results may have varied the team spirit won.
Room 10's Beautiful Birds
Recently papier mache was flying in Room 10 as they made beautiful birds which add a colourful aspect to our office foyer. A great job.
Year 3/4 Camp, Living Springs
Lots of walking, lots of eating and lots of fun had by all.
Ride 'em Cowboy and Cowgirl!
Horse rides, a first time experience for many.
Farm Visit
So that's where milk comes from?? Petting and feeding animals and cart rides - all part of the fun.
Year 5/6 Camp at Blue Skies, Kaiapoi
The flying fox was a popular activity as were the initiatives. Thankfully good weather prevailed.
Slime and Water
The challenge of crossing the pond was a popular challenge despite talk of hungry eels!
Swimming
Warm weather and cool water, a perfect pairing and provider of much fun - and the occasional splashing by misbehaving parent helpers!
Bikeathon
Our wonderful Board of Trustees organised a static bikeathon. We aimed to bike 750km but achieved 1518km over the 12 hours. Teachers take their turn on the bike including me! Over $1,200 was raised for Alice's fundraiser.
Our Support Staff team also took their turn on the pedals.
Just some of our amazing pupil cyclists. In the centre are our head and deputy head boys, Jack and Josiah, who each biked 50km.
Rugby and Radio Bikers
Crusader Andy Ellis and Classic Hits Chloe (and Andy) joined us during the day.
Again just a small group of our wonderful parents who joined in the actvity.
Our Amazing Board of Trustees
Today our wonderful Board of Trustees presented the leadership team with a gift basket to say thanks for all we do for the school. How lucky am I to have such a brilliant board. Thanks Bronny, Warren, Tony, Amber, Graeme and Greg. I really appreciate it.
How To Make A Principal Feel GREAT
After 4 days away, in my in-tray was a wonderful letter from Annabel. It said: "Dear Mr Bangma. I love you for being in charge of Mairehau Primary School. Love from Annabelle." What a fabulous start to a Friday.
Year 7 and 8 Camp - Wainui
What a fabulous week our Year 7 and 8 pupils had at Wainui. Many first time experiences including the high ropes. Daniel holds the safety ropes while DJ and Blake are conquering any nerves. They all made it look so easy.
More Bravery in the Sky
Sage, Joshua and Ismail climb high while Sam balances between the buoys.
Kayaking Fun
While the water was cold the enthusiasm made up for it. Jahan walks out after his swim, DJ and Tina streak thorough the water, Wiremu uses his kayak as a ski and Jackson pushes his into shore. The highlight for many was to have Hector's Dolphins swimming around them as they kayaked. An amazing experience.
Group Initiatives
Growing together as a group was part of the focus. In these initiatives co-operation was the only way to ensure any success. James, Jiselle and Jamie take turns to be blindfolded while the group acted and instructed. Lots of fun to watch and so easy when you are just watching!!
Well Fed
Superb food makes the camp with a balance between the yummy and the healthy. Jenny and Isais enjoy a snack while cooking the next feast while Tala and Poppy prepare to serve. Home made fudge cake was a lovely sweet treat!
Not Forgotten
Recently we received an envelope with cards and letters from the wonderful children at Carterton School. Izzy, Harrison, Caleb, Jacob, Tommy, Jesse and Aaliya enjoying the cards and letters. Thank you Carterton Primary.
English Guests
We were delighted to welcome Richard Millington, Headteacher of Chepping Way Primary School in Buckinghamshire and his wife Elaine to the school. They enjoyed spending time in our classrooms and sharing ideas on topical educational issues. One day we hope to reciprocate.
Junior Camp Day
Cold wind didn't deter our Year 1 and 2 children from testing their boat designs out in the school pool. Unfortunately strong winds and limited steerage saw some Concordias! The children loved it regardless.
February 22 - Memorial
All children at school joined together to remember the tragedy one year ago. After a time of reflection we sat in silence in respect for the 185 people who died.
After our time of reflection we focused on the future: our hopes and what may be by singing our school song The Mairehau Way.
Year 5/6 Camp
Woodend Beach Camp was the venue for the Year 5/6 camp. Here Charlotte and Blair take aim while Jordan, Archie and Paige wait for their turn with the air rifles..
Up the Wall
Starting low before having to don the harness and scale the wall. The boys, Joshua, Josh, Hamish and the girls Alethea and Xanthe enjoying their success.
Aim!
Jordan and Archie try out the bow and arrows under Karen's guidance. Meanwhile Amy and Brooklyn checked out the area while orienteering.
Growing in Confidence
Pushing the limits of self-confidence Grace encourages Kiana up the climbing wall. Ohine and Josh enjoy their success as they scale the high log.
Latest Earthquakes
Calling in at school after the two latest shakes on 23 December showed yet again the mess that will await us when we return. Filing cabinets, while fixed to the walls, still fell open and the contents strewn across the floor, shelving units still in place, also deposited most of the contents onto the floor. Library computers have fallen over on the bench and books and stands are lying on the floor. Ah well, we are getting used to it!
J

Ricky flies on the flying fox on the last stage of the course.
Term 3
Spring of Hope
Children from Waitakere Primary School made us an amazing wall hanging with printed daffodils and a folder of information and fabulous limericks. This is such a fantastic gesture and much appreciated by us after a difficult year. Here Wendy helps hold up this beautiful hanging which will be proudly displayed in our library for all to see.
Super Hero
Georgia, sporting a new hair style, proudly showed me her Super Hero work - on ME!! "He likes to save the day." "I like Mr Bangma, he is a fantastic awesome cool principal. He is cool." How to make someone feel good! Thanks Georgia.
Super John
Josh's Super Hero story included "He is a really busy man because he is a brilliant principal. He is always kind, generous and respectful. He has a dimpled chin and squinty eyes." Not sure about the eyes Josh but thanks for the rest. Very cool indeed.
Quoits Competition
This week we hosted 3 other schools for a quoits competition. The competition was intense but the sportsmanship was good. Thanks Tracey for organising this activity. (Hard to get a good action shot!)

Hi from Toronto, Canada
What a stunning piece of nature Niagara Falls is. We even ventured in the boat to go very close to the falls and got wet as expected!
Presentation
With my fellow principals we presented a paper at the International Confederation of Principals conference. The presentation went well and was well received. Phew!!
Moose Hunt
My hope was to see a moose although the locals told me that was unlikely. So I found Murray the Moose instead.
Welcome
The new look entry to our school. It used to be green and plush and as you see we have gone for the white and cold theme. Brrr!!
Oh No - Snow!
Not content with shaking us over and over we experienced a once in 16 year snow dump. All is white and after 4 days there is still much snow and worse, ice. Thank goodness it happened in the term break.
Heave!!
Our House Captains organised an inter house tug-of-war competition. Plenty of heave went into the contest as can be seen in the members of Kakariki House.
Pull!!
The Kowhai House give an extra heave cheered on by others.
Room 7 Artists
This amazing mural created by Room 7 is a mixed media using colours to describe emotions. Well done Room 7 on your beautiful creation.
Earthquake - Here We Go Again!!
After 2 more powerful quakes we start the cleanup process again. Even my office is usually tidier than this. Our amazing staff and awesome children coped really well despite the situation.
Bigger Office Space
As the office and library continue to slowly sink we have found our neatly fitted carpet now has gaps between it and the wall. Does this mean our office space is getting bigger??!! Walking uphill in the building is a strange sensation.
Library Layout
Once again the books are shaken to the floor. Easy to clean up though.
"Flat" Screens
Adding a new dimension to flat screen monitors, these are hard to read in our computer bay
Books for Mairehau
After the February quake Euan went up to Miller Avenue School in Paeroa for a few weeks. Euan returned to us with 2 new books donated by the kind school community in Paeroa. Thanks Miller Avenue School, we will enjoy reading them. Euan and Aaliyah show us the new books.
We're Falling Apart
Although we have some degree of normality there is a way to go yet. We continue to worry about the back wall of our main block where we have cracks between classrooms and angled walls. We await more engineer's reports on how to fix it!!
Japan Day
A sea of red and white as pupils and staff dressed to show their support for Japan just 3 days after our start back following our latest quake. Pupils raised $560 to send to the Red Cross for those in need in Japan. A great effort and fantastic that they are able to think of others despite their own circumstances.
Japanese Story Time
Marina and her mum Tomomi entertain the staff with a traditional Japanese folk tale.
We Are Back AGAIN!!! 14 March 2011
After nearly 3 weeks away from school we have returned to try again today! The children had a fun morning to allow them time to share their experiences. They were amazing and ended the day with Jucies provided to us from Wakefield Primary. Thanks Peter and your team.
Comfortable and Educational
Caitlyn enjoys a story with Miss Hishon in the armchair in the sun.
Scooters and Rip Sticks
Wheels zoom around the school again as part of our first day back - although we have them everyday at Mairehau Primary.
Quiet Choices
Miria, Beth and Amber enjoy a quiet time of togetherness.
Yummy!
Icing, decorating and then eating yummy cupcakes and cookies. All part of our fun day. Jordan, Ethan and Joel enjoy the results.
Future Picassos?
Josiah, Blake and Jordan display their creative talents during the fun morning.
Cracks in the Administration
No - not the people, but right across the floor. We are unsure what we have to do about this.
Christchurch Earthquake AGAIN
A terrifying time for our children, staff and community. So proud of my amazing staff who supported our children and parents. School now closed and we await an engineer check before we can even start he cleanup. My office which had been meticulous.

The Office Manager's Office littered with filing cabinet contents.
Books Everywhere
The library needs to be reshelved all over again.
Term 1 2011
The shakes keep shaking however they are just enough to keep you a bit on edge - everytime we think we are over the worst, in rolls another!! Despite all this we have been working hard and are ready for another year of quality teaching and learning.
Fantastic Fours
Our Year 3/4 classes have new superheroes!! The fantastic fours are selected from the four classes for displaying their abilities in the Key Competencies. Ruben, Nikita and Archie are our first heroes chosen this week. Well done.

Happy To Be Back
Check and Recheck
With each aftershock we need to check our buildings and grounds to ensure everyone is safe. Our caretaker Paul, along with Brian, have done an amazing job to ensure we are safe at Mairehau Primary.
Happy Birthday
Celebrating Vicky's birthday was a welcome distraction between the earthquakes and getting back to school.
Earthquake
We are thankful that the school has only suffered minor damage of a superficial nature. Most of this can be picked up and tidied up. Structurally there seems to be no damage but we have yet to have that confirmed. Our drinking water is from our own well so this is our main concern as we need to ensure it is safe to drink before school can open again. Some of our staff have suffered some major damage to their homes but no-one has been hurt.
Library
Reorganising of our books!!
SLS Office
One falls while the next stands.

We enjoyed hosting them and hope they gained something from their time in the mainland.
